On this month’s edition of What’s the Mood?, we are joined by a special guest, The Cabinista. I met Peyton on TikTok after one of her videos came across my FYP, and I fell in love with her content. She talks all things home, decor, design, and more. When I started What’s the Mood? in January, I knew I wanted it to be a regular series on my Substack, but I also new that it could get a bit redundant just talking about my mood all the time. That’s when it hit me that other people’s moods can be fun to read about, so I decided to reach out to Peyton. Let’s take a dive into her MOOD!
Spring But Make It Cozy!
Art, vintage finds, and a general refusal to rush into anything. It’s all about getting better, at getting better. No “new year, new me” energy. Just small, thoughtful upgrades to make life feel a little easier, a little calmer, a little more yours.
Romanticizing rest—a linen-covered daybed, a perfectly wrinkled duvet, a book you’re reading for pleasure, not productivity.
Saying yes to slow hobbies—painting for fun, making bread from scratch, pressing wildflowers, writing postcards instead of texts.
Actually using the things I save for later—the fancy tea, the candles I never burn, the expensive notebook I was waiting for the right time to use. (The time is now.)
Making Art, Even If You’re Not an Artist
Spring is about creating, not for perfection, just for the sake of it. We are in our make things for no reason era.
Handmade postcards—send one to a friend, even if it’s just a doodle and “thinking of you.”
Collaging like you’re 13 again—rip pages out of magazines, print blurry photos, glue them onto whatever surface is closest.
Mixing paint colors until you find the shade—then using it to paint a thrifted lamp, your journal cover, or just a big chaotic canvas.
Rearranging books by mood instead of author—because who decided they all need to be alphabetized anyway?
Making playlists like they’re mixtapes—a soundtrack for the exact moment you’re in.
The Not-So-Typical Cozy Spring Essentials
Spring coziness isn’t just light layers and lavender-scented everything. It’s a mood. A way of moving through the season without rushing. My list?
A record player + a morning vinyl ritual—because coffee tastes different when you put on Nina Simone instead of your usual Spotify mix.
A candle that smells like a damp forest—not a field of flowers. Think hinoki, cedar, fig, or petrichor.
A perfectly imperfect bookshelf—stacked sideways, overflowing, always with one book open like someone just left it there mid-sentence.
A long wooden dining table—even if you don’t host dinner parties, even if it’s just for slow breakfasts and late-night journaling.
A porch, balcony, or just an open window—fresh air is free, and sometimes that’s enough.
Things That Represent My Spring Mood
If Joni Mitchell Designed a Spring Reset
Soundtrack: Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman on repeat "Both Sides Now" for soft, golden-hour melancholy, "Give Me One Reason" for windows-down defiance, "River" for those chilly spring mornings that still feel like winter, and "Fast Car" for the kind of thinking-too-much drive that ends at a coffee shop you’ve never been to before.
The Hobby: Making art! Watercolors, charcoal, collage, anything to remember what it feels like to make something just because.
Space: A sun-drenched reading nook filled with collected treasures, mismatched chairs, a stack of old travel magazines, and a half-finished painting.
The Snack: Pie, always – There is never a bad time for pie. (Especially a slightly imperfect, buttery, fruit-filled one.)
The Collection: Art books stacked on the coffee table
Scent: Wild honeysuckle mixed with sun-warmed wood
The Color: Indigo. Deep, worn-in, timeless. Like the perfect pair of jeans or the sky right before it rains.
I think we can all agree that Peyton’s MOOD is immaculate. I can feel the cozy spring vibes radiating from her cabin all the way in New York. From the playlist, to the smell of the candles and baked goods, the art supplies sitting on the table, and the cool hues of blue inviting you to relax. I can see myself having a weekend getaway and thriving.
I’d like to thank Peyton for being the first ever collaborator for What’s the Mood? here at Crying Over Spilled Champagne. I really love the small community I have built on Substack and hopefully we can continue to grow one collaboration at a time. If you haven’t already, go follow Peyton on TikTok and subscribe to her Substack, The Cabinista. Until next time…

Simone, this was such an honor! You’ve created something that feels like the best kind of conversation, thoughtful, creative, and the kind of space we all need more of! So grateful to be here! 💛
